WILMINGTON — The scorekeeper was asking the referees where Blue Mountain is during halftime of Saturday’s Division 4 boys soccer quarterfinal on Hayford Field.
In the background, you could hear the visiting team’s bus running.
Top-seeded Twin Valley opened up a 6-0 lead in the first 40 minutes and ended up destroying the team from Wells River 11-0.
“It was a good win,” said Wildcats coach Buddy Hayford. “We were all over them right from the get-go.”
Twin Valley peppered opposing keeper Hollis Munson with 21 shots, while Liam Wendell only needed to make one save to earn the shutout.
“An easy day for Liam is usually good news for us,” Hayford stated.
Colin McHale and Finn Fisher each had a hat-trick to lead the Twin Valley attack. McHale’s 20-yard laser into the back of the net on a free kick was the highlight.
Aiden Joyce tallied twice, while Aaron Soskin and Matt Hammond also scored. The 11th one was ruled an own goal.
“We had some nice combinations. I thought we did a nice job with our corners.”
The hosts turned three set pieces into goals. Luke Rizio started the two successful corners, with McHale and Fisher each heading one past Munson.
“It has been nine days since our Senior Night game, so I was concerned about possible rust,” Hayford noted after the contest.
But the team’s passing was on point from start to finish, including a pretty give and go between Izaak Park and Soskin. On another play, Noah Dornburgh stole the ball and found McHale, who then sent a through-ball ahead to Fisher.
The Wildcats also made some fine defensive plays. Dornburgh had an early clear, Jerry Mosher and Joyce kept the ball in the Bucks’ zone, and Park used his speed to blow up a threat.
The 8-1 Wildcats will host No. 13 White River Valley (3-5) in Tuesday’s semifinal at 2 p.m.
