8 Holiday 2020 Staycation Ideas, According To Experts

| BEST TRAVEL MAGAZINE

The holidays in 2020 will look and feel very different — not least because, well, traveling isn’t a great idea, public health-wise. Looking longingly at holiday posters for far-flung places and flicking through travel magazines miserably? With 2020’s holidays all about the ‘staycation’, it can be difficult to deal with your desire to be somewhere — anywhere — else.

“People get the urge to travel for many reasons,” therapist Heidi McBain L.M.H.C. tells Bustle. “They want to see family and friends living afar, to visit new places, to create new adventures and memories, or to go back to a special place year after year because that’s their family tradition.”

Itchy feet can affect some people more than others, Cynthia V. Catchings L.C.S.W-S, a therapist at Talkspace, tells Bustle. “Boredom and COVID exhaustion have set in,” she says. “The more we think about being stuck in our daily routine, the stronger

The number of Covid-19 patients in American hospitals has surpassed 100,000 for the first time, nearly double the number from spring during the coronavirus’s deadly first wave, according to the Covid Tracking Project.

The Tracking Project on Wednesday put the number of patients at 100,226.

The relentless rise in hospitalizations follows a rapid climb in new cases, which now number more than one million every week. And deaths, a so-called lagging indicator that tends to spike after a rise in hospitalizations, have also been rising fast. They have now passed 270,000 in the U.S.

How to Maximize Travel Rewards on Holiday Spending This Year

| BOOK A TRIP

You may not be able to give your loved ones a hug this year but you can give them a gift (or five). And you may be wondering whether it’s possible to earn rewards on all that spending.

With travel at such a low ebb, it might seem like a tough time to earn travel rewards points. Yet holiday spending offers a good opportunity to earn these points under even normal circumstances, and the pandemic has created opportunities for earning even more.

Here we outline a few ways you can load up on travel points this season.

(Just don’t tell the recipients of your good cheer how many points you earned.)

Check for new spending categories

If your travel credit cards have been sitting idle so far in 2020, you might be surprised how much has changed. Card issuers scrambled to maintain their valuable travel customers throughout the year, offering

Use shopping portals wisely

Shopping portals and cash-back sites let you earn extra rewards on top of those earned through your card, effectively double dipping your spending. Stacked together, these rewards can be highly valuable.

One interesting combination worth keeping in mind is the cash-back service Rakuten’s partnership with American Express, which lets you earn Membership Rewards points in place of cash. So instead of getting, say, 10% back on purchases made through the Rakuten portal, you would earn 10x Membership Rewards.

At another level of nerdiness, sites like Cashback Monitor compare cash-back and rewards returns at different retailers. So if you’re looking to buy from a particular store, you can see which service offers the best reward bang for your buck.

(Generally) don’t buy gifts with points

It might be tempting to cash in your existing travel rewards points to make purchases directly, and many rewards programs provide this

Travel Will Remain an Integral Part of Our Lives

While 2020 was an unexpected and uncertain year, many Americans adapted by exploring small towns, local lakes and beaches, and by taking scenic drives, according to Expedia’s 2021 Travel Trends Report.

“What we learned by looking at travel behaviors in a year as unusual as 2020 is that travel will always be an integral part of our lives,” says Christie Hudson, a spokesperson for Expedia. She adds that travelers responded to uncertainty and restrictions by staying closer to home and placing a bigger emphasis on flexibility.

But Expedia expects

So there’s no reason to wait to issue a warning. Before Thanksgiving, covid-19 infections were already spreading explosively. One in five hospitals reported that they were facing a critical shortage of workers. The coronavirus surged after Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day, and after an estimated 50 million people traveled for the holiday, the same will certainly be true of Thanksgiving. With most of the country engulfed in coronavirus infections, chances are high that many of those who participated in indoor get-togethers will contract covid-19 and return home to seed it in their communities.

Health-care systems are stretched to their limits, with beds becoming scarce and some hospitals beginning to ration care. Deaths nationally could reach more than 4,000 a day. We have no option but to take drastic steps to “flatten the curve” once again.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention waited until one week
