Family fun on our dog-sledding adventure in the forests of New Hampshire

| FAMILY TRAVEL MAGAZINE

A couple of the dogs are shy or wary, but most are lovable, attention-seeking showboats. They jump atop their houses and excitedly parade about the roofs, or stretch their leashes to lean in closer to us — panhandling pooches begging for scritches. For the dog-averse, this scene could easily be a nightmare. But we happily zig-zag between the doghouses, stroking their scruffy fur, doling out sweet talk, and soaking up the puppy love. It helps that our 7-year-old, a budding naturalist, has a limitless capacity for petting furry creatures.

We’re warned about Moo, named for his Holstein-style black-and-white coat, who has earned a reputation as a charming but mischievous mitten thief. Sure enough, as my wife, Gina, bends to pet him, Moo furtively tugs off her glove — like a magician doing a sleight of hand — and nonchalantly starts to nibble it while still basking in her affections. • Expect these trends to continue into 2021, especially for families, according to Vrbo’s new travel trend report.
  • The report is based on a survey of over 8,000 people, as well as Vrbo travel demand over a 12-month period.
  • We break down the top four family travel trends from the report’s findings below, plus highlight top-rated Vrbos to book.

The travel trends triggered by the pandemic this year show little sign of slowing down as the new year approaches. As travelers continue to prize safety above all else, family travelers especially are seeking lodging in private homes (doctors consider these low risk for virus transmission) in drivable, domestic destinations.

“The Watsons”: How a family road trip story became a classic

| BOOK A TRIP

Curtis takes the Watsons, a Black family, from their home in Flint, Michigan, to Grandma’s house in Birmingham, Alabama, a city that at the time separated Black and White people. Black people had begun to protest being kept out of “Whites only” restaurants, schools and bus seats. While there, the Watsons live through the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, a real-life racially motivated act that killed four girls. Kenny’s little sister was in the church for Sunday school minutes before the bomb went off, but left before the explosion.

Although the bombing is a central element of the plot, the book was not written solely to educate kids about the civil rights movement.

“When people ask why the book works, it’s because it’s not a civil rights lesson. It’s a family story,” Curtis tells KidsPost.

Teasing between Kenny and his siblings, corny jokes from his dad and occasional nagging from

| FAMILY TRAVEL MAGAZINE

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children may not be celebrating the Christmas holiday with Queen Elizabeth II this year.

Like several countries around the world, the United Kingdom has faced renewed restrictions as the coronavirus pandemic rages on. The British royal family is no exception to the restrictions, meaning their annual holiday traditions remain in limbo. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced rules for the upcoming holiday on Tuesday. Brits can be part of one bubble of three households and cannot change that bubble. They will only be allowed to meet in private homes, places of worship and outdoor spaces. The rules will be in place from Dec. 23 through Dec. 27.

Each year, Prince Harry’s grandmother delivers her pre-recorded Christmas message to the British public. The 94-year-old reigning monarch is isolating at Windsor Castle with her husband, Prince Philip, 99, and has not yet decided whether she will
