Albion, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – Pomerelle Mountain Resort had to cut its season short earlier this year due to COVID, but this Friday the resort was able to turn its fortune’s around with a record-setting opening day.

Pomerelle Mountain Resort has a record setting opening day

Zack Alexander, who is the mountain manager at Pomerelle Mountain Resort, said snowboarders and skiers flooded the resort parking lot on Friday, so much, that people were practically parking their vehicles a mile down the road. He said close to 900 people were at the resort the day after Thanksgiving.

“Definitely 15 to 20 percent higher than last year,” said Alexander. “Yeah, you can tell people want to get out”.

The enthusiasm to get outdoors continued into the weekend, as a pair of snowboarders KMVT talked to on Sunday said they have waiting to hit the slopes since the

U.S. Airports See Busiest Travel Day Since March

| TRAVEL IN INDIA

More than 1 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports Wednesday, marking the busiest air-travel day since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March.

The Transportation Security Administration said in a tweet that TSA officers screened 1,070,967 passengers. It was the fourth time since March 16 that more than 1 million people passed through U.S. airports. Two of those million-plus days were recorded last weekend, as holiday travel started in earnest.

As many as 50 million people were expected to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, despite warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that people should stay home to help stem the spread of Covid-19, according to an AAA survey conducted before the last CDC warning.

AAA estimated that travel would be down about 10% compared to last year, though air travel was predicted to drop by roughly 47.5%.

Some air travelers said they knew there were

Remembering Maradona: The day we met Diego

| TRAVEL AGENT MAGAZINE

I’m sitting in a cheap restaurant with a one-page laminated menu by a car park in Sinaloa, Mexico, a copy of Diego Maradona’s autobiography El Diego in hand. It’s May 2019, scorching and the Argentinian photographer should be arriving soon. She usually does heavyweight stuff for quality publications and isn’t the slightest bit fazed about coming to a city on which the US has just imposed its highest, level-four “Do not travel” warning. Syria, then embroiled in civil war, also had a level four. Further US government advice was even less encouraging: “Do not travel to Sinaloa state. Violent crime is widespread. Criminal organisations are based and operating there.”

There are other worries. We’ve come to Mexico without an appointment for an interview, having repeatedly been declined. Hence the book – some more research in the unlikely event that we do meet Maradona.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort prepped for opening day | Local

| HOTEL + RESORTS

Ski season has arrived in Teton Village.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort opens at 8:30 Thanksgiving morning, with the Teewinot and Apres Vous lifts, the Sweetwater Gondola (to the top), and the Solitude surface lift running.

“The conditions are good between the man-made and natural snow that we had over the last few weeks,” Communications Director Anna Cole said Wednesday.

By Saturday, the resort intends to have the Teton and Casper lifts open as well. All that stacks up to an exciting opening weekend for a unique season.

“This season will be very different and unlike anything we’ve experienced,” Cole said.

Among the changes are a multilayer face mask requirement for lift lines and indoor spaces, as well as reduced capacities for restaurants and other retail locations. Another change is a cap on day tickets, which can and will lead to the resort selling out of day tickets at times.

Travel Day 2020: South Carolina Roads Are Deadlier Than Ever

| TRAVEL IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Traffic fatalities in South Carolina have increased heading into the Thanksgiving holiday despite fewer drivers being on the road this year. And as our readers are well aware, preliminary numbers only go up once analysts have had a chance to collect and parse the final data.

According to the S.C. Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), there have been 830 fatal crashes reported on Palmetto “dieways” so far in 2020 – four fewer fatal crashes than were reported at this same point in 2019.

However, a total of 928 people have perished as a result of these crashes as of November 24, 2020 – which is up 2.8 percent from the same point a year ago.

Numerous studies – including one we covered just last week – have ranked South Carolina’s highways as among the nation’s deadliest. And the problem has only gotten worse in recent years despite a host of

Kirby Smart at UGA vs. South Carolina media day

| TRAVEL IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Georgia sits at 5-2 on the season and will visit Columbia, S.C. on Saturday. There’ll be a familiar face on the other sideline, although that would have been the case had Will Muschamp not been let go a little over a week ago. Mike Bobo is the Gamecocks interim head coach and like Muschamp, he’s also a close friend of Bulldog head coach Kirby Smart.

Bobo was on Georgia’s coaching staff from 2001 to 2014, serving as offensive coordinator for the final eight seasons of that tenure. He also played quarterback for the Bulldogs while Kirby Smart was on the other side of the ball at safety. This SEC East matchup really hurt UGA last year. South Carolina rolled into Sanford Stadium, benefited from four turnovers, and walked away with a 20-17 upset victory in double over time.

The Bulldogs will be looking for some payback and

On Friday, 1,019,836 passengers flew in the U.S., 1.5 million less than on the same day in 2019, according to daily figures from the Transportation Security Administration. The figure represents the second-highest number of people to travel by air since March. On Oct. 18, 1,031,505 people took to the skies.

Last week, the CDC cautioned against celebrating the upcoming holiday with people outside of the household, stating that the “safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.”
