The most popular time to travel in the U.S. is around the holidays, and that is not expected to change this year despite a new recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that Americans avoid travel at Thanksgiving.

But the number of travelers that will hit the road is expected to be down.

According to the American Automobile Association, more than 55 million U.S. travelers included a trip away from home in their holiday activities last year. This year, about 50 million are expected to travel, according to AAA projections made before Thursday’s recommendation against travel from the CDC.
