Coronavirus live updates | Infections continue to grow at a constant pace in India

| TRAVEL IN INDIA

India’s first COVID-19 wave refuses to die down. The consistent fall observed in India’s daily count of cases and deaths between mid-September and October-end, did not persist in November. Lately, many States’ case curves have shown fluctuations, with a week of steady rise followed by a week of consistent decline in new cases, thereby keeping the national curve constant.

India’s average daily cases oscillated between the 40,000 and 45,000 marks in November, while average new deaths ranged between 480 and 560.

You can track coronavirus cases, deaths and testing rates at the national and State levels here. A list of State Helpline numbers is available as well.

Sportico sports business reporter Emily Caron on the financial impact of the coronavirus on college basketball.

As millions of college students have been forced to move back home and take online classes because of the coronavirus pandemic, a group of Princeton University grads are creating a university-like environment that’s part NBA bubble, part summer camp at a Texas resort — and they say they’ve already had more than enough interest to fill the 150 available slots.

College friends Lane Russell, Adam Bragg and Chris Cook are behind The U Experience, which will bring together remote students at Tanglewood Resort near Lake Texoma, Texas, from Jan. 28 to April 18. The cost starts at roughly $10,000 with some scholarships options.

COVID Illinois Live Update: Health officials discuss vaccine distribution, coronavirus travel order

| TRAVEL IN SOUTH CAROLINA

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago is expected to update its COVID-19 travel quarantine order and release new details Tuesday on how a vaccine would be rolled out locally.

A group of independent experts are holding an emergency meeting at the CDC Tuesday to vote on who they recommend should get the coronavirus vaccine first.

However, what they decide will be non-binding, and it will be up to state and local officials to decide where the doses go first.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said the state expects to announce a tiered plan later this week.

Health care workers will be the first priority, but the state is promising equity as vaccines become more widely available.

| TRAVEL IN SOUTH CAROLINA

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago is expected to update its COVID-19 travel quarantine order and release new details on how a vaccine would be rolled out locally on Tuesday.

Chicago’s top doctor has suggested a vaccine would be available before the end of the year.

“We’ve been ready and we are ready to start COVID-19 vaccine administration when the trials are done,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, Chicago Department of Public Health commissioner.

Under Chicago’s vaccine plan, thousands of the first doses would go to frontline healthcare workers immediately. First responders and long-term care facility residents would also have priority.

“We are working with our hospitals. We are enrolling them to vaccine providers. We are getting additional information from them on their healthcare worker numbers and who may fit in those higher risk categories,” said Dr. Candice Robinson, CDPH medical director.

Chicago’s vaccine shortage and distribution plan has already been well crafted

A ski resort spread coronavirus across Europe. Austria and Switzerland are eager to reopen slopes anyway.

In Switzerland, some resorts are already in the process of reopening.

In contrast, the governments of France, Italy and Germany are eyeing an E.U.-wide closure of ski facilities until at least early January — usually one of the busiest periods that includes the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Officials in those three countries fear that if some E.U. member states keep their slopes open, tourists could head there instead and accelerate the spread of the virus.

Looming over the upcoming winter season is the coronavirus outbreak in the Austrian ski resort of Ischgl in February and March, which has been linked to more than 6,000 infections in almost 50 nations, at a time when many countries had yet to confirm their first cases.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday became the latest leader to call for a coordinated shutdown of skiing resorts, though she acknowledged that the initiative appeared bound

The calibrated opening up of economy can supplement domestic savings, and help fund the growth requirements.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today said that after seeing a sharp GDP contraction in the first quarter, the Indian economy has exhibited a stronger than expected momentum in activity. However, he added that even as the growth outlook has improved, downside risks remain with respect to the surge in Covid infections.  “We need to be watchful about the sustainability of demand after festivals and a possible reassessment of market expectations
surrounding the vaccine,” he further said.  The calibrated opening up of the economy can supplement domestic savings, and help fund the growth requirements, Shaktikanta Das underlined while speaking at the 4th Annual Day of Foreign Exchange Dealers’ Association of India (FEDAI).

The RBI governor said that market participants responded with alacrity and together we have been able to ensure stable and resilient markets across
