Tourism marketing shows outsiders a sparkling Vermont, open for business

| BUSINESS TRAVEL MAGAZINE

Vermont continues to promote tourism, with a caution about observing pandemic precautions.

Vermont’s glossy winter advertising, an annual investment in the state’s $2.8 billion tourism industry, is rolling out apace this year, despite the quarantine order that effectively blocks most out-of-staters from visiting.

“It’s just you and the mountain, and an exhilarating run to the bottom, and then warm drinks, and locally sourced cuisine, and a fireplace in your cozy hotel room at the end of the day to warm you back up,” says a piece that the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing paid $80,000 to publish recently in New York Magazine. “This quintessential winter experience has always existed in Vermont. Now, during this most unexpected year, it’s just waiting for you to discover it.”

That piece was commissioned in the summer, back when Vermont’s infection rate was so low that the state’s Covid-19 travel map was surrounded by

Pandemic Could Cut Business Travel by 36% — Permanently

Between 19% and 36% of all business trips could disappear, given efficiencies developed during the lockdown, our Middle Seat columnist and airline experts estimate

Baggage claims like this lonely one at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago will be busier post-pandemic, but it will take years to return to the level of business that airlines enjoyed in 2019. Some company trips are likely to be replaced by technology and never return. (Photo: Getty Images/AFP)

Even if Covid-19 vaccines become widespread, business travel is likely to be changed by the pandemic. Travel budgets have been slashed and some meetings will remain virtual; conferences and conventions may be crimped.

But by how much? It matters not only to airlines and their employees but also their customers — travelers. That’s because higher fares paid by corporate customers actually subsidize cheap fares for vacationers. What’s more,

Foreign tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy rate yet to recover in October: BPS – Business

| TRAVEL IN BALI

Tourism has yet to recover from the pandemic-induced slump, with foreign tourist arrivals and hotel occupancy rate remaining below normal levels, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data have shown.

Foreign tourist arrivals picked up slightly to 158,200 in October, an increase of 4.57 percent month-to-month (mtm) from September, according to BPS. However, it was still down 88.25 percent year-on-year (yoy) from the same month last year.

“With regard to COVID-19, there are countries that have relaxed [mobility restrictions] and countries that continue to impose tight [restrictions], which has made foreign tourists reconsider travel due to health issues,” Setianto, the deputy of services and distribution statistics at BPS, said in a virtual presser Tuesday.

Foreign tourists came mostly from neighboring Timor Leste, Malaysia and China, which on average have fared better than Indonesia in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 health crisis has continued to put pressure on the travel industry, as people

Up To 36% Of Airline Business Travel Won’t Return After Covid Pandemic Ends, Study Estimates

Pie chart showing how business travel is changing

Not all business travel by air is likely to return. Uo to 36% of pre-pandemic track may never come … [+] back.

IdeaWorks

A new study by IdeaWorks and reported by the Wall Street Journal is the first detailed look at the long-term impacts Covid-19 could have on business travel. I, along with three other travel professionals, designed the study, conducted the research, and reached out to others for comments. Its conclusions are eye-opening: that between 19% and 36% of airlines’ business traffic base will not return to the skies.

The study breaks down the reasons people have traveled for business, assesses the effects of technology, work at home changes and overall risk tolerance, and validates this with a wide range of industry and travel experts. As a result, this study is robust and more complete than any done since the pandemic began.

The four largest U.S. airlines should take

It’s impossible to stay mid-week right now at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Las Vegas.

It’s not because the 3,007 rooms are sold-out at one of the largest casino hotels in the world.

Far from it.

The 43-story luxury resort expects to sell so few rooms that it can’t justify staying open during the week.

So Mandalay Bay is closed from Monday noon to Thursday noon. The new hours went into effect on Nov. 30, one day before I checked out.

Adjusting your business method during a pandemic, without quarantining your brand > CEOWORLD magazine

| BUSINESS TRAVEL MAGAZINE

Nine months ago, when the pandemic completely disrupted our normal ways of doing business, marketers had no playbook to reach for that would offer guidance for keeping their brands relevant and top-of-mind. Prior challenges – from 9/11 to the 2008 downturn – were not completely applicable, since they did not have the hurdles of remote work and social distancing. Yet, there has been a tremendous evolution in marketing techniques, executed with an impressive level of creativity, all of which occurred at warp speed, as the situation demanded.

One of the most remarkable changes was the shift from in-person events to virtual platforms. From the very first, simply produced virtual events, they have become increasingly sophisticated and complex. For the past several months, just about all consumer and B2B brands have engaged in some form of virtual event.

Among the many challenges of working in the virtual world is continuing to

Could a Review Aggregator Benefit Your Vacation Rental Business?

| BOOK A TRIP

Online reviews are an excellent way for property owners to get feedback on their vacation rentals. Reviews from past guests — especially five-star ones — are one of the best ways to attract new renters and keep your rental booked all season.

But there are a lot of vacation rental sites out there, and you’ve likely got your rental property listed on several of them. That means your reviews are scattered across the internet, making it difficult to see at a glance to see whether your property is a hit with renters. A review aggregator can make a world of difference in your vacation property bookings.

What is a review aggregator?

A review aggregator is a digital tool that gathers reviews of a product or service from all corners of the internet. For real estate investors who specialize in vacation rentals, this involves collecting all the reviews left by previous

Album Review: 1313 Mockingbird Lane – Unfinished Business: The Toilet Tapes | Music | Hudson Valley

1313 Mockingbird Lane | Unfinished Business: The Toilet Tapes

(Cacaphone Records)
Cacaphone.com

Here’s some swingin’ retro-upon-retro rock ‘n’ roll rubbish with which to splatter your platter. Back in the nefarious 1990s, 1313 Mockingbird Lane were Albany’s reigning garage punks, taking their Farfisa-fueled cues from contemporary revivalists like the Fuzztones, the Lyres, and the Cynics, as well as the legions of obscure 1960s one-shot gangs who fill the track lists of Nuggets, Pebbles, Back from the Grave, and similar compilations. Camp horror is key to the aesthetic here—the band’s name is the home address of Herman and family on TV’s “The Munsters”—as evidenced by creepy ditties like “Teenage Frankenstein” and “She’s Got a Werewolf in Her Pants.” Complementing Cacaphone’s deluxe reissue of the group’s 1990 LP, Have Hearse Will Travel (reviewed here in January 2017), Unfinished Business (digital and vinyl) dredges the depths for unheard outtakes, demos, and

Seneca named Native Business Entrepreneur of the Year by magazine | News

| BUSINESS TRAVEL MAGAZINE

IRVING — Businessman J.C. Seneca, a member of the Seneca Nation, has spent the past year celebrating the 25th anniversary of his Native Pride Travel Plaza with a focus on his Tallchief heritage and ancestry.

This November, however, his attention was refocused on national recognition of his own accomplishments as he received the Native Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

The honor was presented to Seneca at the Native Business Virtual Summit on Nov. 20. According to Carmen Davis, founder, publisher and executive editor of Native Business Magazine, the award recognizes Native businesses and individuals who are rising above challenges and circumstances to advance business and protect sovereignty. It also celebrates Natives who demonstrate courage, innovation and commitment to economic self-sufficiency and prosperity.

“J.C. Seneca has mastered the vertical integration of businesses,” Davis said. “His operations are completely self-sufficient, and revenue from one is funneled to capitalize the next.”

Davis
