(CNN) — If you’re one of those people who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to take a cruise out of US ports, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a bit of good news for you on Friday.

The CDC said it’s letting its no-sail order for cruise ships in US waters expire on Saturday. In its place, the CDC has issued a “Framework for Conditional Sailing Order for Cruise Ships” that starts on Sunday, November 1.

But that doesn’t mean lots of ships full of passengers will be sailing like it’s 2019 starting next week — the keyword in this order is “conditional.”

The order is a first cautious step toward the resumption of cruising in an industry

Pandemic axe on Odisha’s Bali Yatra

The annual Bali Yatra (voyage to Bali) held on the banks of the Mahanadi in Cuttack to commemorate Odisha’s maritime glory will not be held this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bali Yatra is usually held on Kartik Purnima according to the Odia almanac (generally falls in November).

Thousands of years ago, people from Odisha used to travel by the sea route to Indonesia, Java, Sumatra and Bali for trade. The Bali Yatra fair, considered to be the largest open trade fair in Asia, is held to commemorate this maritime tradition of Odisha. It draws lakhs of people from various parts of the state and other parts of the country and is a good business opportunity for traders.

Comfort food is reigning in the Bay Area. Is it good for dining culture?

| FOOD AND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

As the pandemic has forced many restaurants to slim down their menus and simplify for takeout, the Bay Area has seen even more comfort food across the board. Michelin-starred Saison pivoted to barbecue, Lazy Bear offered cookie dough bites through its Commissary concept, and upscale sushi bar the Shota has been selling chef Ingi Son’s take on his mother’s inari sushi. Now more than ever, the simple flavors of nostalgic home cooking have been in abundant supply. Is this a good thing for food culture as a whole?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has given cruises the go-ahead to set sail in the U.S. after months of uncertainty — but it could still be months before passengers are allowed on board.

On Friday, the health organization released an updated conditional sailing order lifting their no-sail ban and replacing it with a list of new health protocols and a “framework of actionable items” for cruises to follow beginning Nov. 1.

The order — which applies to ships with the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers and travel in U.S. waters — details how cruise lines should take a “phased approach for the safe and responsible resumption of passenger cruises,” making it clear that no passengers will be allowed to sail at this time.

“This framework provides a pathway to resume safe and responsible sailing. It will mitigate the risk of COVID-19

In Peru’s Cuzco, pandemic devastates tourism and economy

| TRAVEL AGENT MAGAZINE

CUZCO, Peru (AP) — Efraín Valles guided world leaders, pop stars and a princess on exclusive tours through the land of the Incas. He now makes ice cream to survive amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Valles, once one of the most sought-after tour guides in Cuzco high in Peru’s Andes, is one of the 1.3 million people nationwide in a tourism industry devastated by the novel coronavirus and the measures imposed to fight its spread, including international travel restrictions.

Cuzco, the historic capital of the Inca empire near Machu Picchu lives almost entirely from international tourism and is suffering the worst crisis in its recent history. More than 226,000 people who make crafts or work as waiters, hotel staff and taxi drivers, have been plunged into an economic abyss. Merchants say they have lost more than two-thirds of their income.

“We are starting from scratch in an activity that we never

COVID restrictions and lockdowns rise in US and Europe, as Trump’s rallies are blamed for cases

| EUROPEAN CRUISES

A long-feared surge in COVID-19 cases is underway in the U.S. and abroad, leading to a new round of virus-related rules in some areas, restrictions that have quickly met pushback.

The U.S., now topping 9 million cases, on Friday posted a record number of case for a single day, 99,321, and a record 551,167 cases in a week.

A judge in El Paso County, Texas, ordered a two-week shutdown of nonessential services starting at midnight Friday amid growing hospitalizations in the area. Texas’ attorney general has joined several restaurant owners in suing to block the order.

A surge in coronavirus cases has led officials in Harrison County, Iowa — a heavily Republican county — to require people to wear face masks in public. But Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has continued this week to downplay efforts to contain the virus and has rejected mask requirements. Reynolds has said Iowans must learn
